Paris in Winter: 8 Cozy Ways to Make the Most of the City

December 4, 2025

From world-class art exhibitions and ballet performances to illuminated gardens and hot chocolate stops, discover seven ways to enjoy Paris during the colder months.

Paris has a way of making even the coldest months feel special. As temperatures drop and the days grow shorter, the City of Light lives up to its name with illuminated gardens, festive streets and plenty of cozy places to escape the cold. Meanwhile, the city’s cultural calendar is packed with everything from world-class art exhibitions and ballet performances to fashion and design events.

Whether you’re planning a winter city break, visiting for work or spending a little longer in the French capital, there’s no shortage of things to see and do. To help you make the most of the season, we’ve rounded up eight of our favorite winter activities in Paris, from seasonal highlights to local favorites worth adding to your itinerary.

1. Catch a ballet at Palais Garnier

There’s something particularly special about spending a winter evening at the historic Palais Garnier, one of the world’s most beautiful opera houses.

Its gilded interiors, grand staircase and intricate frescoes set the scene for an evening of ballet, music or opera. Whether you’re watching a timeless classic or a contemporary performance, it’s a chance to experience one of Paris’s great cultural institutions from the inside.

Check the Paris Opera’s performance calendar before your visit, and make a little extra time to admire the building itself.

2. Get inspired at Maison&Objet

If you’re passionate about design, don’t miss Maison&Objet, the internationally renowned trade show for interiors, home décor and craftsmanship. From innovative materials and emerging designers to beautifully made furniture and objects, it’s a place to discover new ideas and see what’s shaping the design world.

The January 2027 edition explores the theme Sensory Shift, with a focus on slowing down and experiencing design more deeply.

While much of Maison&Objet is geared towards industry professionals, design enthusiasts can also explore the accompanying In the City program, running January 13–18, which brings participating design houses into the spotlight across Paris.

3. Experience Paris during Fashion Week

Few cities do fashion quite like Paris, and Paris Fashion Week brings an extra dose of creativity to the streets each season. During the Fall/Winter 2027–2028 womenswear shows, the city becomes a hub for designers, photographers, buyers and fashion enthusiasts from around the world.

While most runway shows are invitation-only, you don’t need a front-row seat to enjoy the atmosphere. Keep an eye out for exhibitions, brand activations and other public events happening around the city, or simply spend an afternoon exploring its fashion districts and independent boutiques.

Dates:  1–9 March, 2027

4. See Paris in a different light at Jardin des Plantes

Every winter, the Jardin des Plantes transforms into an illuminated world of nature, art and technology. Its nighttime light festival invites visitors to wander through the gardens after dark, where glowing installations and immersive displays bring plants, animals and natural phenomena to life.

It’s a unique way to experience one of Paris’s most beautiful gardens, especially during the darker months.

5. Discover documentary cinema at Cinéma du Réel

The international documentary film festival brings together thought-provoking films and perspectives from around the world, exploring everything from personal stories to wider social and political issues.

For its 49th edition, Cinéma du Réel will take place across several independent cinemas on Paris’s Left Bank, including L’Arlequin, Reflet Médicis and Saint-André des Arts.

It’s a great opportunity to discover films you might not otherwise encounter, and explore some of the city’s independent cinema scene along the way.

6. Go ice skating beneath the Grand Palais glass roof

If you’re looking for a classic winter activity with a particularly Parisian backdrop, head to Le Grand Palais des Glaces. During the holiday season, the Grand Palais transforms its spectacular glass-roofed nave into a giant indoor ice rink, with 2,700 square meters of ice to explore. Choose a daytime session to admire the architecture overhead, or visit in the evening when the rink takes on a lively, illuminated atmosphere.

Dates: December 13, 2026 – January 6, 2027

7. Spend an afternoon exploring Paris's art museums

Head to the Musée d’Orsay for its extraordinary collection of Impressionist masterpieces, or visit the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris for something more contemporary. This winter’s exhibitions include work by Kerry James Marshall and Simone Fattal, both running until January 24, 2027.

For a little fashion history, stop by Palais Galliera, where an exhibition exploring how women’s clothing challenged social conventions in the 19th century runs until February 14, 2027.

Our advice? Pick one or two museums rather than trying to squeeze everything into a single afternoon. Leave yourself plenty of time for a café break, too.

8. Warm up with a proper Parisian hot chocolate

Sometimes, the best way to enjoy a chilly afternoon is simply to find a café, settle into a comfortable seat and order a chocolat chaud.

For a classic Parisian experience, visit Angelina on Rue de Rivoli, famous for its rich, thick hot chocolate. Pair it with a pastry and you’ve got yourself a pretty convincing reason to stay indoors a little longer.

Or make your own afternoon of it by exploring the cafés and pâtisseries around Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Le Marais or Montmartre.
