September is when Vienna starts leaning into fall, with cooler days, changing leaves and some of the city’s biggest design, fashion and food events. It’s also the start of wine-hiking season and Wiener Kaiser Wiesn in the Prater, making it a particularly lively time to be in the city.

Vienna Coffee Festival

11–13 September 2026 | Marx Halle

Coffee culture is serious business in Vienna, and for one weekend in September, the Vienna Coffee Festival brings traditional café culture together with the city’s growing specialty coffee scene. Head to Marx Halle for tastings, workshops, competitions and talks covering everything from espresso and filter coffee to roasting techniques and sustainable sourcing. Vienna puts its most fashionable foot forward in September as Vienna Fashion Week returns to Halle E+G in the MuseumsQuartier. Around 40 Austrian and international designers are expected to take to the catwalk, with collections ranging from established labels to emerging names in the local fashion scene. Alongside the shows, shopping areas and pop-up stores give visitors the chance to browse and buy pieces directly from participating designers. Wiener Kaiser Wiesn

24 September–11 October 2026 | Kaiserwiese, Prater

For a very Viennese take on Oktoberfest season, head to the Kaiserwiese in the Prater for Wiener Kaiser Wiesn. Austria’s largest folk tradition and Oktoberfest-style festival brings 18 days of live music, regional food and plenty of festive atmosphere to three large tents, five alpine huts and the Wiesn Village. Vienna Wine Hiking Day (Wiener Weinwandertag)

26–27 September 2026 | Vineyards across Vienna

One of the best things about fall in Vienna? You don’t have to travel very far to find yourself surrounded by vineyards. During Vienna Wine Hiking Day (Wiener Weinwandertag), four routes wind through the wine-growing areas around the city, with local vintners serving wine and food along the way. Routes take you through areas including Neustift, Nussdorf, Stammersdorf, Ottakring and Mauer, combining vineyard scenery with views back across Vienna. Vienna has around 600 hectares of vineyards within the city limits, so hiking between them with a glass of local wine in hand feels about as Viennese as a fall afternoon gets.

November marks the shift from fall into Vienna’s festive season. Viennale wraps up at the start of the month, late-autumn colors linger in the parks, and the first Christmas markets begin opening across the city.

The Start of Vienna’s Christmas Market Season

From 6 November 2026 | Locations across Vienna

By November, fall in Vienna starts making way for one of the city’s most famous seasons. The first Christmas markets open from 6 November, when Schönbrunn Palace and Stephansplatz kick things off. From 13 November, the larger wave begins, with the Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz, Spittelberg, Karlsplatz and several other markets opening across the city. Expect wooden stalls, twinkling lights, seasonal food and plenty of warm drinks. If you’re visiting Vienna in the second half of November, you get the added bonus of catching the city right as it starts shifting from autumn into Christmas.
