A THRIVING NEIGHBORHOOD FOR GLOBAL NOMADS
Facilitating global living and working, Zoku is a new category in the hotel industry: A home-office hybrid – suitable for long stays – with the services of a hotel and the social buzz of a thriving neighborhood. It’s a place to call your second home from your first visit, and is optimally suited for people living and working in a city for a few days to several months. Zoku offers the international traveling professional – the global nomad – a home base with both a smart Zoku Loft (private areas) and Social Spaces (communal areas) to work, sleep, play, meet and live in.
THE WORLD DOESN’T NEED MORE STUFF, IT NEEDS SMARTER SOLUTIONS
In 2009, the global nomad was starting to rise. Blending work and leisure, these individuals are not bound by traditional working hours and live across the globe, wherever their work takes them. This inspired co-founder Hans Meyer to personally conduct almost 150 interviews with self-employed professionals, entrepreneurs, travel managers, expat managers and many more, in order to fully understand their needs and frustrations with the accommodation available at the time, and their experiences living and working abroad, far from their homes.
In late 2010, Hans met with co-founder Marc Jongerius, a seasoned professional with a strong background in private equity and venture capital. In 2011, they decided to partner to take Zoku forward. During this period, the first Zoku Loft prototype was co-created with members of the target audience and renowned design agency concrete Amsterdam. Though a basic model it immediately demonstrated the design’s potential.
Over the next years a total of six prototype Zoku Lofts were built. Along with the public area concept, extensive trialing and testing was conducted with future Residents and important partners like housekeeping companies.
In 2012, the listed Metropool government office building, ideally located on the Weesperstraat in central Amsterdam, was vacated for an urban regeneration project. After pitching to the developer, in 2013 Zoku was chosen as a tenant for this exciting mixed-use development, with the community aspect of the concept being cited as a primary factor. In 2014, planning and construction started in earnest. Over the next two years the interior of the building was stripped bare.
Zoku Amsterdam opened in the summer of 2016 to widespread press coverage and international acclaim. The launch was a great success, and with over 40,000 Residents served in three years and having received leading review scores, Zoku is preparing for the first stage of its international expansion – opening in Copenhagen in late 2020 and in Vienna and Paris in 2021.
A place you can call a second home, even on your first visit.
So much more than a long stay hotel. It’s a neighborhood.
Where the neighbors borrow more than a cup of sugar.
They share ideas and ambitions.
They mix the local lowdown with the global highlights.
Where the word on the street keeps you streets ahead.
For this is a ‘good company’ company where everyone can bring their dreams to the table.
Where those busy connecting the world can catch up with each other and the scene surrounding them.
Smart and uncompromising, Zoku is a hive of smart lofts and friendly spaces, designed so you can stay connected, well rested and throw yourself into your work, your play and our city.
This is a place that is furnished to fit, not to split.
Encouraging each other to live, not exist.
To dream, not sleep.
To smarten up, rather than dumb down.
To go at it together, rather than alone.
Together we can work hard, play strong and rest easy.
Whilst we blur borders, combine cultures and live our dreams.
