And more about eating life saving fibre as well.
TUESDAY 16 JULY 2019 | EDITION 23
Did you know capuchin monkeys get their name from the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, who wear brown robes with large hoods? Early explorers who spotted the small monkeys thought they looked like mini-monks. Hopefully there’s less poop being flung about in the capuchin monk monasteries than the capuchin monkey monasteries.

Remember that time you forgot to remember to forget? No? Me either. The older you get the more there is to remember and the more likely it is that you’ll forget. Forget what? I can’t remember.

Michael Koenka is a Pitch Consultant, Investment Advisor, World Shaker and Shit Disturber, and the founder of MDK//Amsterdam, PitchDaddy.com and impossiblefund.org

What path has your career taken?
I’ve been lots of things to lots of people. My first real job was as a retail shop assistant at Roots Canada, then a barista at a hip little cafe called Java U.
Fast forward to today, and in that time I’ve been everything from a trade analyst in commodities, communications director, radio host, advertising executive, and social media Masters’ professor. Now I spend my days as a pitch advisor for founders and accelerators, investment scout, and blockchain launch strategist. I am also launching a fund focused on helping achieve the most impossible ambitions known to man today.

And I’m just warming up.

Why Amsterdam?
In short: the train. I came to the Netherlands originally for work, but fell in love with Amsterdam - along with a beautiful woman who’s now become my wife. I've also managed to set up and launch a few businesses that keep me out of trouble (mostly) and help me grow.

What’s a life-changing book, song, film or event you’d like to recommend to others?
My all-time favourite books include Simplicity by John Maeda, The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday, and The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson. The song I'm listening to the most now is "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked" by Cage the Elephant, and in terms of movies - The Big Lebowski, Focus, and Snatch.

What advice would you give to your 20-year-old self?
Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, and wherever you’re going, you owe it to yourself, to your craft, to the world to do it well. That’s your primary duty. And your obligation. When action is your priority, vanity falls away. To whatever you face, your job is to respond with: hard work, honesty, and a passion for helping others as best as you can. In everything you do. So shut the fuck up and get back to work - trust in the process.

What does home mean to you?
Home is where I’m most at peace. It is fluid. It’s never the same, yet always recognizable. For now, and for the better part of a decade, it’s been Amsterdam. The best fucking city in the world.
