Did you know that 40% of Vietnamese people have the last name Nguyen? It’s one of the world’s most common surnames, but most people have a hard time pronouncing it. In the North of Vietnam, it’s just spoken as “win,” whereas in the South it’s closer to “penguin” without the “pe.” Both pronunciations will be understood. Either way, it’s a Nguyen-Nguyen situation.

THE SIMPLE DUTCH CURE FOR STRESS

THE SIMPLE DUTCH CURE FOR STRESS

5-minute read | Nautilus

Talking of words that don’t quite translate to English, here in the Netherlands, we like to “Uitwaaien.” It’s the practice of going out into nature and thinking things over. The literal translation to English would be “outblowing,” but that makes it sound more like something you’d do to the candles on your birthday cake.

Thanassis Thomopoulos is an expert in Data strategy, Data-Driven marketing, Analytics and Digital transformation. Thanassis's career has taken him from roles such as Director of Sales Organization at L'Oreal, to Marketing Director at Neopost, and to Data Strategy Lead at Google. Recently Thanassis decided to embark on the entrepreneurial path and founded Augmented Fifth, a consultancy allowing Thanassis to use his expertise and experience to help other companies needing some guidance on Digital Marketing, Transformation and Data-Driven marketing.
What path has your career taken?
After 10 years as a computer science engineer and 10 years as a marketeer, I joined Google to do a combination of both. In a recent move I have become my own boss! I started Augmented Fifth because I have seen in my career so many businesses missing out on Digital Marketing, or not able to use data and analytics in their decision making process, that I wanted to help out and seize the opportunity as well. Some companies need inspiration for the board, some are stuck with insufficient skills, but most are struggling linking the strategy, the business objectives, their data silos, online and offline activities… I give them the possibility to orchestrate all this.

What brought you/brings you to Amsterdam?
My previous-previous company, which was originally only for 3 years, but then I fell in love with Amsterdam… that was 9 years ago!

What is your relationship with Zoku, and what are your thoughts?
I am probably the latest WorkZoku member of Zoku Amsterdam, as I joined a month ago. People still ask me if I've purchased a day pass ;-) I love the vibe and can't wait for the sunny days!

What’s a life-changing song, film, event or book you’d like to recommend to others?

What advice would you give to your 20-year-old self?
Take a year off and travel the world. Do it now. Also: Don't break that knee!

What’s your current go-to product, service or app you would recommend to others?Pocket. One click on any browser across my devices, and all my long reads are instantly available on my e-reader.

Which book/product have you gifted the most?
Stroopwafels. Everybody loves them.

What is one piece of advice or tip in your field of work that you want to give to people?
Just start. Waiting is worse than failing.
