Did you know that the author Jules Verne wrote a novel in 1863 that predicted gas-powered cars, fax machines, wind power, missiles, electric street lighting, maglev trains, the record industry, and the internet? It was lost for over 100 years because his publisher deemed it too far-fetched to share with the world. I mean, seriously, who’s going to believe that gusts of wind could power anything?

Jennette Plooij
Jennette Plooij is the Marketing Manager for Timberland Benelux and Timberland Scandinavia, based in Amsterdam. Jennette also Co-Founded a creative agency: Dolly Rogers, before stepping into her current brand management role.

What path has your career taken?
I began in the creative industry, having studied graphic design in Melbourne. I moved to Amsterdam shortly after
graduating and co-founded my own creative agency called Dolly Rogers. We worked on brand strategy and creative projects for youth culture and lifestyle brands, such as Nike, MTV, Mysteryland and WeTransfer. I moved over to the brand side after an invitation from a client to join them in setting up their global marking department. I realised how much I liked having the broader strategic vision and transparency when working within the brand. So I've stayed brand side. However my role frequently involves collaborating with creative agencies on a variety of projects, and it really helps having the experience and insights of both industries.

What brought you/brings you to Amsterdam?
I studied a lot about Dutch design and the Dutch Masters during my arts degree, and I wanted to come here and gain experience working in the creative industry. The Dutch are world famous for design, innovation and entrepreneurship. I love the Dutch mentality of never being deterred by something that hasn't been done before. And always seeking new or better ways of doing things in business, art, society and environmental topics. After 13 years living here, I still continue to be inspired by this!

How long have you stayed at Zoku Amsterdam, and what were your thoughts?
I live in Amsterdam so I haven't stayed at Zoku Amsterdam myself, but I always recommended it to friends and colleagues traveling to Amsterdam. I always hear glowing feedback about the great vibes and community at Zoku.

What advice would you give to your 20 year old self?
Keep traveling and experience as much as possible.

Which book/product have you gifted the most, and why?
Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo - was initially funded by a Kickstarter campaign. It's a collection of 100 stories about bold female innovators and extraordinary women who are profiled in mini-biographies with stunning full page portraits created by female artists. I gift it to all my friends with young kids, cause in today's world of "digital influencers" who our kids are looking towards for inspiration - it's super important for young girls and boys to have some real life heroines.

What does home mean to you?
For me home is about family and friends, love and nurture, good food and happy times. Funnily enough, I'd describe it best with a Dutch word, 'gezelligheid'. These days our home is filled with kids running through it from all over the neighborhood. We often have friends and family from around the world visiting us, it's important to me that everybody feels welcome.

If you could pick one project to work on for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
I'm already working on it! To drive positive change for the planet. Because I believe there has never been a more critical time to harness our collective knowledge, skillsets, talents, passions and personal motivation to save our precious planet.

What’s your current/newly discovered go-to product, service or app you would recommend to others and why?
Creatives for Climate is a new crowdsourcing platform that's calling on creatives everywhere to use their network, power and creativity to collectively amplify awareness of the climate emergency. It has been set up by two Amsterdam entrepreneurs from the Humblebrag - Lucy von Sturmer & Jessica Hartley.
