Did you know that the Native American Navajo tribe celebrate a baby’s first giggle? According to tradition, the first person to hear a baby laugh is obligated to throw a party and cook for the entire family. Together, they celebrate the baby becoming aware of the absurdity of life. We’re thinking about the same approach for commemorating the first giggle from new Zoku team members.

LIBERATE AIR EARBUDS

LIBERATE AIR EARBUDS

Sustainable noise-makers

A few weeks ago, we included an article about how airpods may not be all that great for your hearing or for the environment. These earbuds from the House of Marley provide a more eco-conscious alternative by using sustainable materials such as aluminum, bamboo, and wood fiber composite made from sawdust, as well as recycled silicone and recycled plastic.

Thanks to the interwebs, it’s never been as easy to learn new stuff. Pick up a new language with Duolingo, learn to code with Udacity or train to play spoons as a musical instrument on Youtube. This article explores why psychologists now think all of this knowledge could be weighing us down. But don’t let that stop your spoon-playing dreams.

Jolle van der Mast
Jolle van der Mast is the Co-Founder of the apparel brand, Unrecorded which he founded in 2017 with Co-Founder Daniel Archutowski. Unrecorded is a contemporary unisex apparel brand with sustainability at its core that addresses the fashion industry’s environmental issues, steering clear from its seasonal cycles, and instead offering timeless quality garments crafted from 100% organic cotton. Jolle started his Unrecorded journey at Zoku, using it as a home base when Unrecorded was still in its development phase, meanwhile they just opened their second retail space in Amsterdam.
What path has your career taken?
I studied Industrial Engineering, worked for an American Oil company as an analyst and ended up staying for 8 years, then went on to a packaging company to become a General Manager in the UK. After a couple of years on a roller coaster, I decided it was time to come back to Amsterdam and start a business of my own. Seemed like fashion would be a good place to start as I felt the industry was moving in the complete wrong direction and was in need for some serious change.

How long have you stayed at Zoku, and what were your thoughts?
When Daniel and I started talking about the idea of starting Unrecorded we always used to meet up in Zoku. I believe Zoku had just opened its doors and we started treating it like our second home. I think we must have been there on a daily basis for a couple of months before we decided to hire an office. I believe there are two reasons I really enjoy being at Zoku and both are because the communal area is on the top floor. One is the light and the other is the fact that it feels homely because there isn’t a door opening the whole time with a draft coming in from the street (which most hotels have in their lobby)

Which book have you gifted the most, and why?
I am not a big reader so don’t gift books that often…but I really enjoyed Haruki Murakami’s 'Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage' and have given that book to a couple of people.

If you could pick one project to work on for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A carbon neutral wave pool in The Netherlands that makes better waves than Kelly’s one.
